Fraternal Exaltation was designed by Richard Garfield (the designer of Magic: The Gathering) as a celebration of the birth of his second child, his son Schuyler. Richard distributed copies of this card to family, friends, and select business colleagues. It is estimated that approximately 200 copies of Fraternal Exaltation were given to Richard by the printer, Carta Mundi, but it is not known how many of these were distributed.
Richard asked his sister, artist and graphic designer Susan Garfield, to create the illustration for Fraternal Exaltation. As a gesture of appreciation he gave her a framed arrangement of 20 cards. In 2024, Susan disassembled this arrangement and recreated by hand her painting on the back of each card, autographing and numbering each one.
The mismatched socks in the painting are a nod to one of Richard’s lifelong quirks, never wearing matching socks. In a further nod to Richard, Susan has playfully chosen to use different unmatched socks in each reproduction. The highly limited nature of these artist proofs and the human touch added by Susan’s painting make these the most highly coveted Fraternal Exaltation cards of all.
