Ancestral was founded and is operated by Joel Mick, whose involvement with Magic dates back to 1992 when he was one of the playtesters Richard Garfield enlisted to help develop Magic prior to its publication. Joel was one of the principal designers of Antiquities, Mirage and Visions. He assumed the role of lead designer for Magic: The Gathering at Wizards of the Coast from Richard Garfield in 1994. He later served as Vice President of Magic brand until Hasbro acquired Wizards in 1999.
Joel is an avid player of Old School, Legacy, and Alpha 40, as well as a longstanding collector of rare and vintage cards. His varied collecting interests include pre-publication playtest cards and first edition (beta) artist proofs.
