Phoenix Heart was designed by Richard Garfield (the designer of Magic: The Gathering) as a celebration of his marriage to his wife, Koni. Richard distributed copies of this card to family, friends, and select business colleagues.
Richard commissioned Magic fan-favorite artist Drew Tucker to create the illustration for Phoenix Heart. Drew’s painting depicts Richard and Koni in battle together under a phoenix-heart-sun-filled sky. As a gesture of appreciation Richard gave Drew two copies of the Phoenix Heart card. In 2024, created a reproduction of his painting on the back of each card, autographing and numbering each one.
The uniqueness of these artist proofs and the human touch added by Drew’s vibrant painting make these the two cards most highly coveted celebration cards of all.
